Barrie:

Besides the fog lamp relay, the twin cam parts book lists a
"Harness--fog-lamp relay, (N.America)"

Depending on the installation proceedure, relays also
provide a shorter route for the lamps power, and may also
eliminate some connections.

Consider the MGA. If the fogs are wired to the dash switch,
the power comes from the rear mounted battery to the starter
switch, through the scuttle to the ignition switch hot side,
to the light switch, then to the fog switch on the dash,
back out the scuttle to the front to be connected to the
lamp.

With a relay, power for the lamps could come from the
starter switch through the relay and then to the lamps
(Fused of course would be best). It doesn't pass into
through the scuttle at all plus several extra connections.
