Marc,

  I don't remember what type your carbs are but before you toss the
floats, submerge them in gas to test for leakage and buoyancy.  If
they'll float and are free on their pivots, there's no reason to discard
them.  Are you sure the fuel lines and vent lines aren't reversed?
