I think you are interpreting the direction of rotation backwards. If the
mark on the left is TDC, the other marks represent degrees of advance; i.e
the 3rd mark from the left would be 10 degrees advanced. The situation you
are describing sounds like the timing is retarded.
I admit that when I was helping a friend, we found these timing marks
confusing. My car happens to have a replacement engine with the timing marks
viewable from the top.
