The system works together.  If you remove one part, other areas can tend to
give more of a problem.

On the MG the gulp valve feeds air into the inlet under high vacuum
conditions, meanwhile the air pump is shooting air into the exhaust all the
time.  If the gulp valve does not operate the rich mixture at the exhaust
port mixes with the air pump air and detonates.  This is the same for SU or
Zenith.

If the gulp valve operates corectly the mixture is leaned out and the engine
does not backfire.  The problem is that the system never worked correctly,
and the cars would always backfire slightly on decel.

T^(^(&mph did it differently and used a diverter valve to stop air pump air
from being injected under decel.  There was a popular kit that I used to
install years ago that did the same thing for the B and Spridget.  It
replaced the gulp valve with a diverter valve inline with the air rail feed,
no more backfires.
