Not long ago, I posted a message here about strange noises from the
engine of my 1974 MGB that at first made me think that a main bearing
was going bad. Many of you wrote and said that a loose flywheel was a
more likely culprit. I haven't been able to give the car the attention
it deserves, but have another question related to this. If the flywheel
was loose, would the car make abnormal noises while starting? When it
starts, it doesn't sound any different than usual. At idle, noises are
starting to be heard that sound almost like a moaning, and the idle
seems a bit rougher than usual. The moaning disappears under load and at
speed, but there is still a strange noise present. I'm beginning to
think that the exhaust work I had done could be responsible for this. I
had the downpipes from the engine to their joint under the driver's seat
replaced due to rust. Is it possible that these noises could be as a
result of the exhaust touching the body in a place where it shouldn't?
Thank you,
-William Killeffer
