Skip - can't tell you the depth limits, but can tell you the best location.
The late cars put them in what I think is the best location, near the front
of the car. I've seen many earlier cars where the speakers were put near
the back of the door. But if you think about this, it's a bad place. When
the door shuts, that end of the door is at the highest velocity, and you've
got a significant mass in the speaker which wants to keep moving, eventually
damaging the door panel.
