Jim, I used rubber gaskets also. First I used silicone sealer to adhere the gasket to the covers, then used permatex black (non-hardening) between the gasket and the engine body. Just tighten them enough to slightly compress the gaskets. Put everything back together and run the engine and check for leaks. If a slight leak you can tighten the nuts a bit.
