Backfiring (out of the exhaust) on the overrun is usually caused by a faulty
gulp valve.  It is the air pump that causes the backfiring, and the gulp
valve that is supposed to prevent it.  All emissions kit would need to be in
good condition, and the ignition and carbs in a good state of tune.  Get all
those right then see what happens.
