Hi,
Those are your supports for the tonneau cover. There are two  "ovulated" 
slots one at the rear of each door opening those two "metal tubes"  should 
slide 
one into the other and you'll have two rectangular brackets one on  each end of 
the tubes. Those rectangular brackets will slide into the slots at  the back 
of each door opening giving the tonneau cover a support that runs  across the 
width of the cockpit. My cat likes to sleep nestled in the naugahyde  cove 
that is formed between the tube support & the rear edge of the tonneau  where 
it 
attach's to the MG's body. You can strip those down and spray them with  a 
rustproof paint nothing fancy mine are painted a primer gray color and are  
fine.
