The reason for taking the carbs off is to avoid damaging them or the linkage
with the chain you use for hoisting. Depending on how you sling it this may
or may not be a problem.

I usually prefer to pull the engine with the transmission attached. In your
case this may aid in diagnosis, as you will be able to observe the process
of detachment, rather than have it occur in obscurity.
