Dave,

I first did this by accident. 

I still do accidentally move my turn switch horozontally from time to
time, but I have never known if this is a "design feature" or if I am
forcing it beyond its normal operating range.

All I can tell you is that mine has not broken even after 7 years of
such abuse.
