The shifter sounds kind o generic but if he has the correct back plate and 
other things then it is from a B. My mechanic has a few BW35s. He has at least 
one complete B auto tranny setup but it also has a generic shifter from a 
Marina as someone paid big cash one time for the chrome shifter. The market for 
these has usually been for a MG ut who now has a disability that prevents using 
a standard.

This probably is from an Austin Marina from the early to mid- 1970s - The
Nash/BMC Metropolitan enthusiasts have been doing these conversions for
years since the aging of their flock. They are also using the Japanese
version BW auto that came on late 1960s Datsun 1600SSS. Engine was built
under license to BMC.
