Oil on the friction plate from a leaking rear oil seal?  Look for oil
dripping out of the drain hole in the bellhousing.  OTOH after replacing the
clutch because of a failed release bearing the new one exhibited shudder
whereas the old one didn't.  No oil leak, and it hasn't got better or worse
in the 30k+ miles since.  I just use slightly higher revs than otherwise I
would, although others have said it is higher revs that causes the shudder.
If no oil leak, and you aren't prepared to remove engine/gearbox to look at
it/replace it anyway, I'd just experiment with different driving techniques.
