Paul,

It is the same water pump that has been on it since I got the car a couple of
years ago. I will put a 180 deg stat in tonight and see what happens. I had
bought a 193 deg stat at Autozone (which I believe was called standard in Moss
catalog) a few weeks ago thinking my original one might be bad, but it made no
difference. So I ordered a 180 deg stat from LBCarco and will stick it in
tonight and see what happens and I'll check the other things you mentioned. I
still have the old stat, but can't remember what temp degree it was.

Thanks to all of you for your many ideas, I really appreciate it.

I'm not clear from this whether it *is* overheating or just the gauge
showing too high. 165F is the rating of the original standard thermostat,
subsequently increased to 180F. The gauge should be near N at these temps.
Later electric cooling fan stats were set to 194F and should come on about
mid-way between N and H, dropping about half-way back from there to N by
the
  time the fans switch off.

215F *is* hot, but I don't know what it would show on the gauge, but I
guess
pretty near H. First thing I'd do is fit a 180F stat. If it *still* goes
up to H, and the measured temp is *still* 215F, then for whatever reason
your engine is producing more heat than the radiator can get rid of i.e.
either the engine is producing way too much or the radiator is unable to
get
rid of a normal amount of heat. If the bottom hose is significantly cooler
than the top then I'd say there is insufficient flow, which could be due to
a blockage in the engine, the radiator, or the pump isn't moving enough
coolant. Do you have the right pump? I've heard tell that the two pumps
are interchangeable, but one incorrect combination results in very poor
flow. If the two hoses are at about the same temperature then the flow
would seem OK, which would tend to preclude a blocked rad, so could be the
  engine producing too much.
