That's a bit harsh.  Maybe true in the 70s, but not true for 20 years or so.
There were many factors contributing to the demise of MG Rover, the quality
and performance of the cars - particularly the latest MG variants - was held
to be pretty good even in comparison to more up-to-date European
competitors.  They had the baggage of the designs, quality and labour
relations of the 70s to contend with, and not least the continual
knocking-copy of the British media where anything British is concerned.
