Bob,

There were two castings for the single intake/exhaust manifold.

The first casting was prone to cracking where the exhaust made a
hairpin turn before the catalytic converter. The crack would appear
on the inside of the bend and run to the top bolt-hole of the
converter.

The second casting has a "C" shaped support cast through this weak
area.

I believe that is why there are two part numbers for this manifold.
I also know this manifold was also found on Austin Americas with a
single SU HIF6, which are interchangable with the late MGBs.

Also worth mentioning: make sure the exhaust pipe that drops down
from the converter is properly braced with a strap to the
transmission/engine restraint rod. If this strap isn't in place, the
stress and flex is taken by the catalytic converter gasket and the
manifold.

Good luck!

Steve
