Not in my experience. Mine started playing up - short-stroking and causing
fuel starvation intermittently. The problem was you had to wait until it
decided to start working properly again, no quick thump for these. After a
few bouts of this, including in the garage where I was able to get into the
electrics end of the pump to do some tests and try and see what was
happening, all to no avail, I couldn't live with it any longer as I needed
the car for up to 150 miles every day. I swapped it for a refurbished
points-type and have had nor more problems. It did run OK for several
years, but the 2500 miles mentioned by someone else is nothing, I was doing
that in about 3 weeks. 25,000 miles without problem should be a minimum,
and in my experience it should be double that. I just don't trust
electronic after-market bits for critical areas like the fuel pump and
ignition. They frequently fail totally and without warning, and even if
intermittently they are extremely difficult to diagnose, substitution is the
only thing you can do. By contrast points (on both) are simple, reliable,
easy to diagnose, easy to do a 'get you home' repair, and for ignition at
least easy to replace at the roadside and cheap to carry a spare set.
