It is doubtful whether 30 year old wiring, switches and connectors are up to
the job of the factory lighting!  *Any* upgrade really should be accompanied
by relays and ideally separate fusing for each filament.  The only exception
to this is if the new units take less current than the original.  Factory
HIDs certainly take less than factory halogen in equivalent modern cars, but
modern halogens probably take more than original MGB units.  The headlamp
trim ring certainly doesn't twist to come off, the bottom has to be pulled
or levered forwards.  It is retained by a spring-clip which rusts and
becomes very reluctant to slide off, it can take some force, at which point
a puller is better than levering against the paintwork.
