I'm not sure which instructions you're quoting, but there is another
critical test for new rings.  You need to insert each ring in the cylinder
and use a piston to push it to the bottom of the piston travel.  Then take a
measurement of the end gap.  YOur manual will have the end gap clearance
specs.  Too much will cause blow by and too little will break a piston.
