Remember that any era of MGB could currently be fitted with any distributor
from any other era of MGB, or even from other BL models of a similar age, or
possibly even from another motor manufacturer!

MGBs changed from 25D to 45D (the basic design) with rubber bumpers. North
American spec cars got 45DE4 and then 45DM4 electronic distributors whereas
other spec cars e.g. UK stayed with 45D4 points distributors. 45DE4s were
notoriously fault prone and many were changed for 45DM4s (the modules for
which were used by many manufacturers and are still available) under
warranty. Post warranty failures could well have been replaced with a 25D4,
or retro-fitted with points and condensers, or aftermarket trigger.

Within those basic designs there were no less than 24 different reference
numbers ranging from 40897 to 41853 denoting the individual centrifugal and
vacuum advance curves. Any one of these will run any MGB engine, but the
performance and economy will better with some than with others. What is
*best* is a unanswerable question, even the so-called 'Eurospec'
distributors have curves designed for 1970s petrol, and virtually no one can
get that now. A North American 1979 would originally have had an 18V 883,
884, 890 or 891 engine with either a 41813 or 41814 distributor, but of
course it could have an earlier or later engine (or one from another BL
model), which would probably mean a different distributor originally.
