Rich,
If your car is '75 or older it is smog exempt. However, the DMV will  inspect 
it as an out-of-state vehicle to see if all the original (if any)  emissions 
equipment is still there. I  bought a '67 TR4A in Canada and  brought it to 
California. A DMV clerk actually went out to the  car and looked under the 
hood, 
just like she knew what she was looking  for.
