FWIW, my car sits each winter as well.  I last replaced the cap in
2003 (I think), when it had developed a carbon trace from the #1 lead
to the securing clip.  Couldn't figure out why the car was running so
badly until it got dark and we could see sparks on the cap.

Since then, I've replaced points, plugs, wires, switched to electronic
ignition, replaced the engine... but kept the cap.
