Ok, so did some additional diagnostics today......
1) Removed the pipe from carb to canister. No fuel flow. And when engine wa=
s running, no change to idle speed when hose was removed.2) I ended up putt=
ing fresh plugs in anyway, but made no difference.3) I also took off the di=
stributor cap - cap was replaced when car was gone through in August of 201=
3 and seems ok. There was a dusting of a yellowish powder=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=
=C2=A0 on the inside of the cap, and also in the distributor itself - you c=
an see it in the pictures. Not a lot. Here are pics of the cap and rotor -

Agreed, does sound rich, which would be a cause of a smelly exhaust and not=
 starting hot.=C2=A0Coils can also fail when hot, but the symptom of that w=
ould be no spark.=C2=A0It is now time to start looking at the carb, and fir=
st I'd take the pipe to the canister from the carb and with the ignition on=
 see if you have fuel overflow i.e. faulty float valve or sunk float.=C2=A0=
