I look for total advance when timing an engine.  If I recall correctly my to=
tal advance is about 32 degrees BTDC at 3000 rpm.  Set the initial mechanica=
l timing and have distributor advance provide the rest.  This usually involv=
es changing the distributor springs to make the centrifugal advance quicker t=
han factory specs.=20
