Hi Folks,
I'm just back from Hershey and am in the usual daze brought on by seeing
oneself reflected back from one too many brass radiators. There was a
morgan in the car show entered by MOPs Bob and Ruthmary Newell. Had a
great time visiting with them and it was fun to see Morgan friends of
old come spectating by. The usual scene was to spot someone you know
with eyes fixed, looking down, checking out the sportscar row then get
sucked in by that pretty red four-seater and then finally lift eyes to
see who was standing behind it. Ah! the eyes light up in recognition of
Moggie people wholly unexpected in that AACA environment.

There was a first ever classic car auction on Friday afternoon/evening
held by Brooks, the UK auction people. Very nice cars! I waited
through the never ending sales of automobilia paintings, prints and
posters, radiator mascots, and complete wicker picnic baskets and whiled
away the time reading a book of the collected writings of Ken Purdy that
I had found in the flea market. (Three Wheels Are Enough, Elisabeth and
The Racing Mog, etc.) The framed art stuff went for a few hundred, the
the picnic baskets loaded with china and sterling went for a few
thousand and the radiator nmascots went anyway from several hundred to
several thousand. Finally, the cars. The '33 Packard dual cowl phaeton
went for 110K, a '71 XKE 12 cyl for 29.25K, the Ford Model K of '07 for
85K, a '47 Talbo Lago Record for 56K, etc. There were some deals also,
a 30's Buick restoration project for 500 and a similar condition
Tickford-bodied Lagonda for 600. Finally the '67 Morgan DHC in black, a
very nice North Jersey car last licensed in '86 was driven up on the
stand. It was bid up to 23K but did not make the reserve.

Somebody in this group was looking for a DHC. Rich Maloumian has one
for sale that I saw last weekend at the MG show. It's complete, running
and licensed, etc. Needs paint and detailing. Call him direct at
215-248-1695.

Back to the auction, a Cad engined 1950 Allard went for 104K but the
highest priced sportscar in the auction was a 1959 BMW 507 at 240K sold
to somebody on the phone.

If you've never been to Hershey you can't imagine the scope of the flea
market and car corral. Three days of walking, sunrise to sunset, will
get you through most areas, but you won't see it all.

Your foot weary corrspondent,
Tony Souza
