Jeremy,

At last count over 22 (of the original 19) transitioned grill cars had been
located.  Either they enjoyed a spectacular survival rate or more than 19
were built (not to mention several flat-rads that were converted at the
works and had the flat grill inserts fitted).

The "19" number that John Worrall quoted, as near as I can tell came from
Pat Kennett who told me, in correspondence that he had talked to a worker at
the Works who said that he only built 20 grills.  That 20, minus the one Pat
found in the rafters gave the 19 number.

I have a copy of a 1981 letter from Mr. Day at the Works to Nan Noble (who
at that time owned 3148 - not a transition car) wherein he stated that 46
were built.  Several others were built with "bean can lights" and rounded
grills (stone guards).  Who's right?

  My son's transition car is P3051. I would certainly like to hear from
anyone having one of these cars to further clarify the records.
