Hi There
Ross, I`m no expert and as yet have not managed to acquire a
Morgan.......If an exhaust system is under mechanical pressure along it`s
length in order that any clamp meets a particular chassis bolt then over
time it may fracture at the weakest spot. As the system is not rusted, you
could have the box welded back in ?

The exhaust system should be a tuned length designed to give optimum
performance over the normal operating range of the vehicle as dictated by
the car manufacturer......Assuming Morgan get that technical ? The
exhaust has a resistance to the flow of the gasses, oft termed back
pressure, to alter this back pressure will affect how the engine breathes
(volumetric efficiency) with less than the designed back pressure the car
may run weaker and hotter to a degree. Tweaking mixture can restore the
status quo.......

How to identify a cat..... In the UK most cats have shields as they run
hotter than silencers, and usually there is a sensor located close for
monitoring by the EFI system.

I have read somewhere of folk who fitted a modified exh system without the
rear box, they fitted a straight pipe first, then found they had fumes probs
? they extended the tail pipe length which then grounded on steep ramps,
some bent the pipe to exit in front of the rear wheel, very sporting (-:

Just my immediate thoughts.

Cheers, George
