Since most of us like to tinker with mechanical things (or why else be on
these lists?) I thought I'd pass on an experience I had this weekend.

Several years ago, my dad and I were on a trip through Winchester, VA. As
we approached Winchester from the South on 17, he asked me if I'd every
seen the mill at Millwood. I told him no. Since it was getting near
lunch time we stopped. Unfortunately it was not open, but a nice shady
place to stand around and eat some sandwiches my mom had packed for us.

Since then I've been past there but never when they were open. They are
open Thur-Sun. from 9am-5pm and they grind on Sat. Well Sunday, on my
way back to Va. Beach from Penn State Univ. I managed to get to Millwood
about 3pm. So we (my family, wife and 2 boys) stopped. It was fantastic!!!

I can't believe what the people of the time were able to do with wood!

If you ever get near Winchester VA, you need to try and stop off there.
It is 12 mi. South of Winchester off of Route 17.

Many of you have probably heard of White Post Restorations also. White
Post is only a few miles from Millwood. Since I'd heard of White Post
for years I decided to run by there also. The artisans at White Post
Restorations work a 4 day (10 hr) work week - Tue. thru Fri. They always
welcome visitors. Unfortunately, when I was there, they were closed, be
we did look inside some of the windows. The owner who lives on the
premises came out and was extreemly friendly and hospital. An exqusit
gentleman. We had to ask him what "White Post" was all about. He explained
that George Washington was tasked to survey some land and planted the
"White Post" to mark his starting point and to measure distance from.

The "White Post" is in the middle of an intersection. While that's about
all that is there, it is interesting to see.

The bottom line is, if you are ever in the Winchester area, you really should
go by both White Post and Millwood. Very interesting. I wish I'd taken
some pictures but I left my digital camera at home.
