Some of the lever action shocks were double acting. You might try filling
them with hydraulic jack oil before chucking them. If they are dry that will
make a big improvement at minimal cost. If you have a big cap at each end of
shock body it is double acting. If body does not have symmetry, it is single
acting. Crummy ride usuually due to shot spring eyes and their bushings.
changing to double acting shocks from working single acting won't make a big
difference.
