It is important to know if you still have huck brakes. There are several small
springs that are in line with the pivot pins and shoe pins. These are heavy
short springs of a very small diameter (about half of mine were broken). You
mention that the cylinder was blown apart - there is also a spring in the
cylinder. It is a lighter spring of a larger diameter. I searched extensively
for reproduction parts for huck brake on Chevy trucks and the only parts I
could find are the shoes and return spring (as it is usually broken). Vintage
Automotive in Woodinville, Washington sells original parts but be prepared to
spend a few bucks (as an example, the pivot pin keepers are $5 apiece and you
need 3 or 4 per wheel). I suggest you get as many parts from a junk yard as
possible. Please e-mail me off list as I have some spare parts left over. I
suggest you pick up a '50 shop manual as it does have some good photographs
that will assist you in figuring out the huck brakes.

It is very hard to tell,as the little sprung is so rusted, the hook on
one side is broken off.I also let the brake shoes go free and they swing
freely on both sides, but they are held down further down the shoe.I
think the long spring goes from shoe to shoe but the little one has me
stumped. Tommy

The only problem is that '50 used Huck style brakes. They used one long return
spring under the wheel cylinder instead of
the two on Bendix brakes. Does the 1 inch spring have hooks on the ends? If not
this could be a hold down spring.
