My 56 GMC came stock with the Pontiac 316ci V-8, and it has a very strange
exhaust system (stock). The drivers side exhaust doesn't exit toward the
back, the manifold looks like is installed backwards (like a passenger side
manifold installed on the drivers side), it loops forward under the
fan/water pump, just in front of the oil pan and connects into the other
exhaust as it exits. I do know that I have seen one GMC with the
Hydro-matic and the V-8 and it had a similar setup (mine has the
four-speed). This could be something to do with the fact that both trucks
were NAPCOs, but I don't know. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck
