What you are experiencing is a very common problem with these trucks. My
Suburban has had similar damage, so has my Dad's 55 & 57 GMC's and my
brother's 55 Chevy.
I don't know of an easy way to get in there. I used a really long, and
slightly modified screwdriver and a really heavy-duty shop vacuum to clean
mine out.
The only way that I know to keep stuff from collecting is not a reasonable
option, and that is don't drive it. Someone else may have developed a
better method of keeping the stuff from collecting.
Patch panels for these areas should be available from your favorite "Ole
truck" supply place. I have seen only the ones from Chevy Duty, and they
looked to be nice quality. As for the other suppliers, they could be
better or they could be worse. I haven't seen them up close. Good luck
with it.
