Try using a rubberized masking coat.  Hobby shops sell stuff called
"Maskit" its a pink liquid that can be painted on to cover what you don't
want painted over then you can remove it easily when done.  I have used it
a lot of times to paint lexan bodies for RC cars.

If you are careful and use a sharp Xacto knife to score the edges of the
masking they are very sharp. 

You said that the plate has the right color letters, why not use them?  Get
some 3/8" masking tape and rough cover the letters with the tape, then
paint Maskit on the edges, cleaning them up with a knife.  Once covered,
spray the plate black then remove the mask to reveal the white letters.
