The lack of dot showing on the flywheel could be that your 180 degrees
out....meaning that it's just on the exhaust stroke and not the intake
stroke.

If the teeth are in fact chewed up,  wouldn't you be able to see the rotor
not turning for a second "when the missing teeth aren't contacting the crank
gear" when the engine is being cranked over?
