I've helped shorten a column before and is very time consuming :

a) Removing the column shaft
b) Cutting the column about a foot or so above the box
c) acquiring a support bearing that is the same outside diameter as the
column and inside diameter as the shaft. The "support bearing" can be held
stationary by drilling through the side of the column into the "support
bearing" outer wall and installing set screws.
d) Cut the lower shaft so it will protrude say 6 - 8" out of the lower
collar
e) Slide the upper column to the desired location for comfort
 f) Modify the upper part of the column in the same manner.
 f) now you have two shafts that can be connected by a Borgeson U-joint
g) Contact Borgeson U-joint and give them the shaft diameter, install and
your done.

***A lower support plate is required where the column passes through the
floor***

oletrucks is devoted to Chevy and GM trucks built between 1941 and 1959
