My Dad once installed a 348 (same physical size as the 409) in a '62 1/2 ton.
The mounts and transmission for its 283 fit, so it's basically a direct swap.
I do recall that he "clearanced" the firewall with a sledge hammer, but I
think I'd pull the front fenders as a unit, and hang the engine/transmission
assembly in place before I moved any metal. You'd need to determine the exact
location of the interference anyway. The massive heads of the 409 would be
the cause of any interference.
BTW, there were many different versions of the 409, so you may not actually
get more power than your 327. The compression may be so high that you can't
make it run without retarding the spark a lot, then you won't have any power
or economy. It would LOOK neat, though.
