Assuming you have an ignition switch with a
"start" position, a starter solenoid with 2
large studs and 2 small studs and a negative
ground system:
First it is necessary to find out which of the
two small studs on the solenoid needs to connect
to the START position on the ignition switch.
To do this (without any test equipment):
Disconnect the + cable at the battery
Connect the - cable at the battery
Connect a wire to one of the small studs
on the solenoid. Best guess is the
one furthest from the engine block.
Momentarily touch the other end of this
wire to the + terminal on the battery.
If you hear the solenoid engage the wire is
connected to the START stud on the
solenoid. If not, the wire is connected
to what I'll call the "bypass" stud.
Mark (or at least remember) which is START and
which is BYPASS.
Remove this wire from whichever small stud.
START terminal of ignition switch connects to the
START stud on solenoid.
Ballast resistor (side A) connects to:
Coil +
Solenoid BYPASS stud
(it doesn't make any difference which end
of the ballast resistor you call A)
Ballast resistor (side B) connects to
RUN (maybe marked IGN) terminal on ignition switch
BAT terminal of ignition switch connects to large stud
on solenoid farthest from starter motor.
Large stud on solenoid farthest from starter motor to
battery + is hooked up last. Connect the solenoid
end first. Then "brush" the other end of this
cable across the battery + post. There should be NO
spark. If not, connect to the battery + post.
All should be ready to go.
