Joe,
          Why the Duh!?! at the end of the subject line in your reply?? Were
you born with this knowledge of rear axles?? I am sure at one time you
did not know this info and someone passed it along to you.

Brian ,

Your questions will be answered when you pull the axles out of the rearend.
You have to pull the axles to have them redrilled for the Chevy bolt
pattern.  Then you can count the axle splines to determine if its a 28 or 31
spline and also measure the bearing diameter.
