If you have turn signals from GM (not the kind that bolt
onto the side of the steering column) and if the turn signals
work properly at the rear of the truck do the following to
narrow down the problem.

1. Make sure the turn signal switch is in the off position.

2. Have someone depress the brake pedal while you observe the
brake light switch from beneath the truck. The switch is
just to the side of the hole where the pedal comes
through the floorboard. Does the arm on the switch move
when the pedal is depressed? If not, can you move it by
hand? The switch has an internal spring forcing it to
the "on" position. A released brake pedal returns it to
the "off" position. I had the internal spring break in
mine. I made a new spring from some spring wire I bought
at a local hardware store. I have since bought a new
switch, but the old one is still working.

3. Are both wires attached to the switch?

4. Assuming #2 and #3 above don't produce the results you are
looking for, remove both wires from the switch. Short
the two wires together. Do the brake lights come on?
        If so, replace the switch.

5. Is 12 volt DC available in ONE of the wires removed from
the brake light switch? Use a voltmeter or a test lamp
        to find out.

6. If the answer to # 5 is no, trace the wires to determine
which one does NOT go to the steering column. This wire
should connect to a good source of 12V that is available
        with the key off.

7. If the answer to #5 is yes, the problem lies either in
the wire that goes from the brake switch to the turn
signal switch in the steering column or in the turn
signal switch itself. Is the turn signal switch new?
A better question might be, did I sell it to you a few
months ago? If so, is it still the 3 wire switch that
I told you would need to have 3 additional wires added
so the brake lights would work?

My brake lights on my 59 GMC are not working. I believe the signal lights
and
tail lights are still working but not the brake lights.

I have checked the fuse and now I am looking for anyones experience to help
out???

Oh yeah, I do not have original tail lights but the standard square rear
lights most common on trailers and larger trucks.
