Bill,

What I want to do is just swap out the gears in the rear end not the whole rear
end. The archives seem to be more oriented on the swap out of the entire unit
rather that the internal gears.

Looking at the American Classic Truck list of axles indicate that the axle ID
for my 55 Cameo is an AF 3.90 made at Detroit Gear & Axle and in 1959 the 3100
series truck axle ID AY is a 3.38:1 also made by Detroit Gear & Axle. My
thought is that would probably be a match and I should search for a 59 rear end
with that axle code to get the gears from, but my ignorance shows since it has
been 25 years or more since I've messed around with old cars. That combined
with some errors in the American Classic Truck VIN decoder which doesn't have
the V-8 engines or my Hydramatic transmission listed for my Cameo nor does it
have the V prefix in the VIN decoder. Sooo.... I'm hopeful someone on the list
might have some experience with this same problem.

You mentioned looking through a GMC Master Parts Book, is there a similar book
available for the Chevrolet trucks?

Ernie:
In the past there have been many discussions of
what rear ends will fit properly under which trucks.
Try reading the archives at
http://www.escribe.com/automotive/american/chevygmtruck/index.html?by=Thread
and typing REAR END in the search field. You will
probably find more than you ever wanted to know.

Bill,

Thanks for the heads up on removing springs to improve the ride rather than
go
for the monoleaf springs, it really improved the ride.

Another question for the you and others on the list, I need to swap out my
3.90
for a 3.55, 3.31 or 3.08 rear end, where can I find a reference book that
tells
me what components will fit on my 55 Cameo so I know what years to look for.
The local shop thinks 55-62 will fit, but isn't sure if there was a specific
55/56 rear end set.
