The best book for a NOVICE (like me - even after 3 years) was written by
Victor Page - titled CHEVROLET SIX Car and Trucks. You can find it on an
unnamed auction site for around $15 to $20 bucks. Look for the number of
pages the 500+ is from 56 and back the 700+ page is mid fifties. Any copy
covers back to the 30's. It is written like you have never owned a truck
and they will walk you through everything.

Okay,
First, understand that most of the time you guys are talking way over my
head, I am far behind the learning curve when it comes to rebuilding my
truck. I am amazed at the way you all can expound on rear end ratio's and
the benefits of a 351 v6 to a straight 6 305. Although, I did know the
"Farm
to Market" Question.
I am learning a lot just by reading your tech talk. Although, it's like
learning to play baseball from the daily stats in the paper, at some point
you need to put on some cleats and actually hit a ball. Well, I've got my
cleats on and I'm trying hard not to brake the neighbors window.
I've got a 1950 1/2 ton Chevy. I am rebuilding the brakes. I've got the
books, got pictures, got the brake kit package from Chevy Duty, and a friend
who has rebuilt a 56 1/2 ton.
What I don't have is any idea of where the hold down springs (cone shaped)
and clips attach?
I know where they sit and which hole in the shoe the clip goes through. I,
for the life of me, can't see where the thing hooks on. I would assume that
since they named them "hold down springs" they would actually hold something
down.
This maybe like asking a rocket scientist for help with your arithmetic,
but,
I just don't see how it works. I would appreciate any help, I can send
pictures.
