Thanks for all the simpathy. in answer to some questions it was the pinion
bearing that seized. it had been growling for some time, and I just havent
been able to tear it down and keep it down long enough to do any thing major
since the loss of my daily driver to an accident about four months ago. when
the bearing seized I was between a set of doubles and the curb, the truck
swereved to the left and I almost hit the front trailer of the big truck,
got it straight and then it swerved right into the curb. on impact with the
curb the hood latches failed and the hood came all the way over and smashed
the windshield, the tuck at this time was in a halftwist to the left when
the front bumper hit a low concrete barrier with a chainlink fence on top,
this threw the truck into a quarter gainer with the half twist and bounced
it airborne down the fence line for about fifty feet, the truck landed with
the left front down aganinst the wall on my left and the right rear up
against the wall on the right. all of the fencing material was carried
across the underside of the hood and arround the cab, the hood saved me from
any serious injury by not alowing any part of the fence to come through the
windshiewld. the seat belt did its job exactly as designed. I do have the 58
chevy short stepside in a basket at home and between it and what's left of
the GMC I can still build myself a nice truck. miraciles do happen.
