They are:

Easier to find replacement parts when they wear out.

Typically cheaper to replace when worn out or break.

More secure...they are a better latch in the respects
that the doors will have a less likely chance of
opening when applying pressure to them (such as
leaning on the door).

Typically, they don't "bounce" like the originals
somes would do if the door was closed hard or due to a
temperature change.

Can be, in some cases, easier to close.

Just a few reason I could think of off hand.
