An idiot light can be used with an alternator. On the 10si (most common)
units, the number 1 connector gets hooked up to a resistance wire or
idiot light. Wire one side of the light to 12v, and the other to the
connection on the alternator. 

The number 2 terminal goes to a constant 12 volt source. Most people
just tie this back to the large output post on the alternator.

On the non 10si units, I don't know which terminal gets the light, but I
assure you, there is a provision for it.
