Well Murphies law has strck again. I have leaky grease seals in my 51
GMC half ton withthe torque tube rearend. No bg deal right? Just
bought new seals at my local NAPA store. Tore into the rearend as the
repair manual explains. There is a lock screw that hols the pinion
shaft in place, which in turn holds the block that keeps the axle half
out in place. Well the screw was broke a couple of threads from the
botom of the threaded portion. Te last couple of threads and the pn
section are still in the carrier. The pin is hardened and impossible to
drill, THe carrier is cast so I don't want to try to hammer on the
pinion to try to break the pin because the castig will break first.
The pinion is also hard and not to be drilled.
Now for my question. Any ideas on how to get this out? My thought
was to drill the casting out oversize to pull the pin out and then tap
to larger size and make a new threaded pin out of a hardened bolt to the
new size. Does this sound like it might work? Has anyone else run
into this, or is the answer to look for one of you guys in the Ohio
area that has pulled his old rearend and is looking for a new home for
it? And hope it is not the same way.
