Dave, bummer on problem, sounds like odd stuff that happens to me! I have
had keyways repaired on small engines by
having welded down bad side and then painstakingly grinding and filing back
to shape to fit key. You won't get it exact as
it was orig, but tight enough to hold key. It will be a real pain in the
truck. Maybe if you removed the rad and front sheet metal in that area so
you could work on it clearly, it would work. A wire welder will make less
heat and smaller beads.
May have to remove front seal if too hot, maybe not as it don't touch the
crank. Otherwise, you may be looking at new crank or at least pullling it
and engine. Have to remove flywheel, and clutch to get that out, and all
rods and etc. Best to be out of truck. Didn't this make a Knocking sound all
this time? A hillbilly fix that may work, is JB Weld filler, fast dry type,
that you can push into keyway after key is set in there to form shape. Let
dry and grind file it to shape. Tractor guys swear by the JB Weld stuff for
lots of weird repairs. Has to be real clean, no oil, use Brakleen spray on
the area and let dry first.
Not the news you wanted to hear I'm sure. Good Luck!
