Hi:

In regards to the check engine soon light, some GM cars had service reminder
lights that could be reset while other "check engine" lights would light up
when an error code has been recorded by the computer. To see if this light is
an error code, take a paper clip and short the upper right two terminals of
the little diagnostic plug located under the dash. It should be easily seen
when looking under the driver's side of the dash. Once you have these two
terminals shorted, turn the ignition key all the way on, but do not engage the
starter. The light will flash the code(s) recorded. It will start with a
"12". It shows the 12 code by flashing the Service Engine Soon light once (the
first digit of the 12), it will pause, then it flashes the light twice (the
second digit of the 12) and then there will be a longer pause. It will give
you the 12 code 3 times. Then, the next flashes will actually begin the error
codes in memory. It will flash the same way..... for instance, 3 quick
flashes, a pause and then 4 quick flashes is a 34 code. All GM codes 1995 and
older will be just 2 digits. It will give you each error code 3 times and then
begin the next code. When it begins flashing a series of 3 "12" codes again,
you are finished. Turn off the ignition and remove the paper clip. To find
out what the code means, you can look in your shop manual or call your local
Autozone. They will give you the codes for free. In fact, they will read the
codes for free as well.

Good luck!
