The gear isn't supposed to be on the end of the actual cable. It will be 
inside the transmission. The cable should be square on the end that meshes 
with the plastic gear set on the inside. If you pull the cable, you may see 
a small plate on the inside held with a couple screws. Remove this plate 
and you should see a couple of plastic gears, one of these gears may be 
stripped. They come in different tooth counts to calibrate the speedometer 
and they come in different colors to correspond to tooth counts. Of course 
i'm unsure of what tranny you have but the above could be true in your 
case, could be wrong but it may help.. .
