I don't recall when the 454 was first available. I feel like that's too
early to be a 454, but I don't really know.

I think you are asking if the transmission would be a turbo 350. If the
truck is a factory big block it would not be a 350, it would be a turbo 400.

I presume by 403 you really mean 402. For all practical purposes that motor
is the same as a 396. I've been told that some trucks of that era said 400
on the side but were actually the 396/402, not the small block 400.

The width of the valve covers quickly tell the difference between a big
block and a small block. I don't know how to quickly tell the difference
between a 396/402, 427 or 454. Or 502 for that matter either... I owned a
couple of 396s in the 70s and just last week bought a 454, but bought it
without seeing it, and have not yet seen it.

I don't know how to confirm what size it is short of checking the numbers.

i have the chance to get a 72 chevy 2wd running with a trashed tranny.
having not seen it yet-i need to know if it came with a 454 factory? and if
so, would it have a 250? tranny behind it?
ive seen other trucks listed with a 403 BBC-what is that and how do i tell
the difference from a 454? whats the easiest and fast way to tell what motor
it has in it?
if its the 403 or whatever-is that a usable motor in the real world or is it
too hard to get parts?

thanks for your help! if i can i will get pics but prob not till i go to buy
it.

btw-its a 72 longbed fleetside 1/2t-i thin kits half.
thanks
mark
