      I think on the older disc brake setups, and maybe some modern ones, the 
backing plate is nothing really more than a splash guard for the brakes, to 
keep excessive water or mud or solid debris off them. It's kind of quarter-moon 
shaped. With modern brakes, alot of them no longer use a splash guard/backing 
plate. The drum brakes need something to mount the hardware to, whereas all 
the  braking hardware is contained in the caliper, so usually no external 
backing plate behind the spindle is needed or could be fitted anyway, depending 
on 
design.
